Caroline Le Breton (b. 1966), artist and interior designer, lives in St Leonards on Sea. She studied painting in Bristol, interior design at Chelsea and has an MA in European Fine Art from Winchester School of Art. With her late husband Jonathan Cole, she co-founded Project Artworks and Claremont Studios, a historic building which they restored together. After Cole’s death, she curated two Arts Council funded exhibitions, both of which reflected on themes of loss and our relationship to the environment. She has made installations for Art in Romney Marsh (2010) and House (2012) in Brighton. In 2015 she collaborated with Becky Beasley on the installation of House of Life at Project 78 Gallery, St Leonards on Sea and in 2017 her show ‘Ous’ at The Towner, Eastbourne.
‘My work investigates the relationship between people and place and how we understand and are formed by our environment. I often use existing spaces and objects as a basis for transformation and intervention. Instead of creating autonomous art objects I am responding to what is already there. In both my art and design work I explore the concept of interior space as either a protection from, or connection to the rest of the world. I am interested in the transition from the inside to the outside, from private to public, both literally as a physical journey, and conceptually as an inner journey, from a private sense of self to a lived experience of being in the world.’
